Motts Upcycled Plastic DIY Apple Game

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree! Make & play this DIY game craft made from upcycled materials in partnership with Mott's®.

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

  • 8 oz Motts Apple Juice Plastic Bottle
  • Disposable Plate(s)
  • Hook-and-Loop Fastener
  • Motts Applesauce Cups
  • Motts Applesauce Pouches
  • Pencil(s)
  • Upcycled Cardboard

Steps

  • Step 1

    Pour equal parts yellow and brown paint onto disposable plate. Mix paint together with paint brush.

  • Step 10

    Paint foliage on tree. Dry 1–2 hours.

  • Step 11

    Glue 10 small hook-side pieces of hook-and-loop fastener to tree.

  • Step 12

    Glue small loop-side piece of hook-and-loop fastener to the bottom of each applesauce pouch cap. Let all glue steps dry 1–2 hours.

  • Step 13

    Place cardboard tree trunk into painted plastic bottle, fitting cardboard slits snugly against bottle neck.

  • Step 14

    Shape Model Magic 6-sided die. Dry overnight.

  • Step 15

    Write one of these values on each side of die with marker: X, +1, +1, -1, +2, -2

  • Step 16

  • Step 2

    Cover 2 applesauce cups with paint to create apple baskets. Dry 1–2 hours. Add second coat. Dry 1–2 hours.

  • Step 3

    Draw seam around the center of baskets with marker.

  • Step 4

    Remove cap and label from apple juice bottle.

  • Step 5

    Cover bottle with brown paint to create tree trunk. Dry 1–2 hours. Add second coat. Dry 1–2 hours.

  • Step 6

    Remove caps from 10 applesauce pouches. Discard applesauce pouches.

  • Step 7

    Paint 5 caps red and 5 caps green to create apples. Dry 1–2 hours. Add second coat. Dry 1–2 hours.

  • Step 8

    Sketch tree outline with foliage approximately 5”H x 1”W and trunk approximately 7.5”H x 9.5”W on large piece of cardboard. Cut out.

  • Step 9

    Cut a slit on left and right of trunk approximately 1/2”H.

  • We found using 5/8”W circular hook-and-loop fasteners worked best for this project.

  • Helpful hint: Hooks are the scratchy side of the hook-and-loop fastener and loops are the fuzzy side!
