  • Colored Pencils
  • Craft Paper on a Roll
  • Map
  • Washable Markers

Steps

  • Step 1

After studying a historic journey, cover a long wall with craft paper and help students create a large outline of a map of the appropriate region. Invite students to mark and label key points that relate to the journey.

  • Step 2

Ask the class to brainstorm a list of things the traveler(s) may have seen or experienced along the way.

  • Step 3

Invite each student to choose one landmark or experience to illustrate, and then glue the image to the mural map in the appropriate places. Suggest that they each add a briefDescription of the event.

Adaptations

Invite other classes to view the mural. Suggest that students serve as docents describing the historic journey they have been studying.

Expand on the journey theme by recommending historic fiction books that deal with journeys. Encourage students to think about how these journeys affected history. How do these stories connect with students' own journeys?

Combine social studies and math lessons with a map reading unit. Show students how to determine cardinal directions and mileage between cities using a map. Create math problems that students can solve by using a map
